C.S. Lewis‘ children’s stories about a lion, a witch and a wardrobe that leads to a magical land, have been delighting readers since 1950, when the first The Chronicle of Narnia book was published.
Now Netflix is adapting the franchise into a TV series and a set of movies. Although this is the first time a company has bought the rights to all seven books, Lewis’ novels have been adapted for screen before. But the amount of content acquired this time around might explain Netflix’s plans for both a TV series and — possibly multiple — movies. It’s not yet clear how the stories will be broken up and divvied out on-screen.
Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer at Netflix, talked about the longevity of the fantastical stories, saying, “C.S. Lewis’ beloved Chronicles of Narnia stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world.
“Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.”
