Telegram to bring ads on it's platform as it's approaching 500 million users mark

Instant messaging app Telegram is “approaching” 500 million users and plans to generate revenue starting next year to keep the business afloat, its founder Pavel Durov said on Wednesday.

Durov said he has personally bankrolled the seven-year-old business so far, but as the startup scales he is looking for ways to monetize the instant messaging service. “A project of our size needs at least a few hundred million dollars per year to keep going,” he said.

Durov, founder of Telegram has announced monetization plan for the platform. He said that for most of Telegram’s history, he paid for the expenses from his personal savings but with current growth they require appropriate funding.

Ruling out the option to sell Telegram like Whatsapp, he decided to cover the costs through premium subscription, business users and ads.

What's gonna change (and what isn't) on Telegram in upcoming weeks:

1. Most important thing all features that are currently available will remain free forever.
2. New features are gonna be added for Business and Power users to generate revenue.
3. There will not be any ads in messaging that includes private and groups.
4. Some public channels use third parties to post ads for money, Telegram will now create its own Ad platform for this purpose which will be non intrusive.
5. Lastly, if Telegram starts earning money it will share it. Large public channels will receive free traffic in proportion to their size. If Telegram premium stickers are added, their artists will get a part of the profit.

If we ever introduce ads, the ads will be shown only in large one-to-many channels which are expensive to run due to server and traffic costs (like my channel @durov) and not targeted based on any private data (unlike Facebook). So, no collecting private data, no user profiling etc. And if you don't use our one-to-many channels (which are non-existent in all other messaging apps), you won't see a single ad.
