Following its Rs 300 plan to give 2 GB of data and unlimited calls to any network in India, Tata DoCoMo has now unveiled a new plan that adds 3 GB more at an extra cost of Rs 50.

The pack offers five times as much data for Rs 350 as is given by competitors like Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular.

The new plan, currently being tested via an invite system, entitles subscribers to use a total of 5 GB of 2G or 3G data and unlimited free voice calls at Rs 348 per month.

The operator has 3G services in nine circles: Madhya Pradesh – Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra – Goa, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh (West).

The plan comes close on the heels of two other cheap data plans — 10 GB for Rs 498 and 2 GB + unlimited calling for Rs 299.

The plans are the cheapest voice + data bundle in India.

In comparison, Reliance Jio offers unlimited calls plus 4 GB of data at Rs 499, while Airtel and Idea offer 1 GB of data and unlimited voice-calls at Rs 350 per month.

Assuming a cost of Rs 150 for the free calling facility, DoCoMo is essentially giving 5 GB of 3G data at a price of 200, or Rs 40 per GB.

Tata DoCoMo is present across the country, but its network coverage is not on par with those of tier-1 operators like Vodafone and Airtel. The company operates on the 1800 band, because of which its signals have difficulty reaching deep inside buildings.

Moreover, it has relatively fewer number of towers.
