IPL stars register for TNPL draft

The Jolly Rovers trio of Piyush Chawla , Ankit Bawne and Robin Bist have all signed up for the draft. While leggie Chawla has been a key member of the Kolkata Knight Riders team for quite a few years, Maharashtra batsman Bawne made his IPL debut for Delhi Daredevils in the recently-concluded season.

It is also learnt that Kerala speedster Basil Thampi , who won the Emerging Player Trophy in IPL 10, is likely to register for the draft in three days' time. Thampi, who represents Globe Trotters, claimed 11 wickets in 12 matches for Gujarat Lions and impressed most with his ability to bowl yorkers.

Gambhir eyes mentor's role in TNPL

Gautam Gambhir has won a lot as a player. Now he is planning to don the mentor's hat for the first time in his career.

The twice World Cup winner and two-time IPL winning captain Gambhir is looking to be part of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) in the coming season as a 'mentor'. The former India opener told ToI that he is in talks with quite a few franchises, but a final decision hasn't been taken. "Yes, I am in talks with a few franchises for a mentoring role," Gambhir told ToI from New Delhi.

However, Gambhir made it clear that he won't be playing in the tournament. "This tournament is for up and coming Indian youngsters. It is a platform for the local talent. I don't want to block a young talent by playing in TNPL," he added. ToI has learnt that Gambhir has submitted separate presentations to the franchisees he is in talks with. He has made it amply clear that he wants a more in-depth role and not just a decorated involvement which is merely a marketing push.

As the deadline for cricketers registering for the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) approaches — it closes on June 15 evening — the scenario is becoming interesting.

Predictably much focus is on the outstation cricketers. Players from the other States who are registered with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) clubs are eligible to play in the TNPL if they sign up before the cut-off date.
