CHENNAI: There was hue and cry over the participation of the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) registered outstation players during the inaugural edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) last year. Eventually, the BCCI didn't grant permission for the outstation stars to feature in the tournament.
However, with the second edition of the TNPL set to get underway this July, a top source in TNCA mentioned that the TNCA registered outstation cricketers "can register" themselves for the player draft which is likely to be held in the second week of June.

"We are opening the registrations for the draft from May 6. Though TNCA registered outstation players didn't feature last time, they can register for the TNPL draft and we will include them in the list. We are figuring out on how to go about it," the source told TOI on Thursday.
Some of the top stars who are registered with the TNCA are Pandya brothers (Hardik and Krunal), leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, Punjab speedster Sandeep Sharma, Gujarat Lions and Kerala pacer Basil Thampi, KKR and Saurastra wicket-keeper batsman Sheldon Jackson, Delhi batsman Unmukt Chand, India U19 skipper Abhishek Sharma, Punjab allrounder Gurkeerat Singh Mann, allrounder Jalaj Saxena, Kerala batsman Rohan Prem, Andhra keeper batsman Srikar Bharat, Himachal Pradesh batsman Robin Bist and Maharashtra batsman Ankit Bawane, who is now part of the Delhi Daredevils squad.
The player registration forms will be available at the TNCA office from May 6 and the last date for submission of form is June 10. Those who were released by franchisees last year and fresh players who are interested to participate in the draft can register themselves. As many as 37 players were released with Madurai Super Giants letting go of nine players.
Some of the notable players who were released by Madurai are S Thyagarajan (who was part of the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad in 2012) and G Vignesh, who was part of the Chennai Superstars team in the now defunct Indian Cricket League, had played Ranji Trophy for TN and was part of Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders teams in the IPL.
VB Thiruvallur Veerans released three players -- Samruddh Bhat, D Govindaraj and Santosh Shiv. A team source indicated that the trio were released because of the fact they couldn't give them more playing opportunities.
Meanwhile, Kanchi Warriors let go of six players including young batsman M Shahrukh Khan, who was part of the TN Ranji Trophy probables this year.
Dindigul Dragons, which has R Ashwin as their star player, have released five players, while S Badrinath-led Karaikudi Kaalai have released six players

The second edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) is likely to be conducted from the final week of July till the last stretch of August.

Sportstar has learnt from reliable sources that the T20 competition will last 30 days this year; The TNPL was held over 27 days in its inaugural edition.

TNPL office-bearers, over the past few days, have been in intense discussions with broadcaster Star India over the scheduling of the event.

Last year, the TNPL was held in the months of August and September but Star India, apparently, does not want TNPL to clash with the India games, particularly those telecast by it. The two sides strove to find an ideal window for the tournament.

India is likely to tour Sri Lanka in August, however, since Test matches are expected to be the major component of that campaign, the match timings would be different from those for the TNPL matches.

If India tours at that point in time, then the State could be without its marquee players R. Ashwin and M. Vijay, who are certain to be picked if fit, and possibly Abhinav Mukund or Dinesh Karthik.

And Star India is keen to have Ashwin and Vijay promoting TNPL games even if they play only a handful of matches.

The source said, “This is not always possible, particularly if the Indian team is touring. There is nothing explicit to that effect in the agreement either.”

This year could also see some new venues added to the tournament. Among those in contention is the IC-Guru Nanak ground here but the source said nothing had been finalised yet.

The player draft for those cricketers released by their respective franchises will be held in the first half of June
