Actor and conservationist Dia Mirza has been named the ambassador for Swachh Bharat's youth based Swachh Saathi (student internship) program.

"Swachh Bharat is amongst the most important initiatives taken up by the government and I believe that the Swachh Saathi program will be an extremely important part of our dream to realize a clean, healthy and environmentally conscious youth and country," said the actor after accepting the honour.

Under the Swachh Saathi program more than 2000 interns would be enrolled, who would coordinate with around 10,000 schools across the country and ensure that all students in these schools take the pledge for Clean India.

"Dia is a youth icon and has been an active campaigner for Swachh Bharat. We felt that she would be the best person to help us reach out to more youngsters. Our aim is to make it a viral youth led movement," said Swachh Bharat Mission Director, Praveen Prakash.

As Brand Ambassador, Dia Mirza would be interacting with thousands of school and college students from across the country through awareness sessions, community cleaning activities and motivational videos.

"Over the years I have tried to engage as many minds as possible to understand that our planet and our country need the immediate involvement of all its citizens, so that we can take responsibility and make our world a better place to live in," added a smiling Dia looking forward to her new role.

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar will be seen promoting the usage of toilets in new Swachh Bharat videos, which was launched by Union Minister of Drinking Water and Sanitation, Narendra Singh Tomar today.

Tomar praised both Bachchan and Tendulkar, the two brand ambassadors of the Swachh Bharat Mission, saying they are very dedicated to the cause.

“They are very committed to the Swachh Bharat Mission. Despite being so busy, they are always available whenever we have asked for their help.

“They have been very forthcoming about joining us to promote swachhta (cleanliness). Sachin was part of our recent event. Amitabh ji is also always ready,” Tomar told reporters here.

In the video, Bachchan, 73, asked more people to join him in the mission to clean India.

“Authorities have made people aware of the usage of toilets and are also building toilets. So, come lets join Swachh Bharat Mission. If not now then when?”

Sachin is seen saying, “You have to stand with me and join me in this mission. Together we can build an India where everyone uses toilets.”
The campaigns will be launched on television besides hitting online platforms. It will also be translated into other regional languages.

The Swachh Bharat Mission was launched on October 2, 2014, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tomar said that he is glad to see that the public has joined in.

“Happy to note the increasing citizen participation in Swachh Bharat Mission. Twenty-three districts in our country are totally free from open defecation. Toilets have been built in every household in 85,000 villages. Our target is to build toilets in every household by 2019,” Tomar said.

Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Bihar are the worst performing states in Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, according to a survey while 61 per cent of its respondents said that cleanliness has improved in their neighbourhood in the last two years. The survey conducted by LocalCircles, a citizen engagement platform, covered 60 cities, 19 states and 14 national polls to assess the impact of two years of Swachh Bharat.

In the state and city level surveys, citizens from Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat have suggested a visible improvement of 30 per cent or more in cleanliness, while Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Bihar states were the worst performing with their residents saying they observed minimal or no impact. Across the nation, only 9 per cent citizens feel that the improvement is more than 30 per cent and most suggesting a marginal improvement, according to the survey, which also said that 40 per cent citizens indicated that civic sense has improved in the last two years.

Things were not as positive on the public toilet front with only 20 per cent respondents suggesting that the availability of such toilets has improved in their city. The biggest challenge, according to respondents, for Swachh Bharat Mission is municipal engagement, capability and delivery.

Will highlight issue of open defecation centric on women, joins Amitabh Bachchan in PM Modi’s initiative. It takes a star with maximum reach and impact across India to be chosen as the face of a nationwide health and sanitation campaign Anushka Sharma has been chosen to be the face of PM Modi’s initiative, the Swach Bharat Abhiyaan along with Bachchan for the same. She is the female ambassador of this massive country wide campaign, and has been picked for her popularity with youth across rural and urban India, particularly women.

The ministry has handpicked Anushka to sharpen and centre their communications towards Indian women, especially those who live in rural and semi rural India. A source adds, “ As per research done extensively by the government, men resist using and building toilets in rural and remote areas but women really want to use these. They are often unable to do so as the men don’t feel the need for it. Consequently, they end up defecating in open spaces like fields and farms which has many risks and dangers for women. Adverse effects of open defecation include spread of disease and safety of women and children. The safety of women is threaten because of going alone to the fields and other places solely because they are unable to use the toilets . Given that Anushka has wide appeal with young audiences and has played inspiring female characters onscreen, the government felt she would resonate with women, and was therefore chosen for the campaign.”

When Anushka heard about this aspect of open defecation, which goes beyond hygiene and health alone, she was appalled. The source explains, “When Anushka found out these details, she was shocked and decided right there and then that she must do this campaign. Centric towards achieving behavorial change in people, especially in motivating women who can take a step and drive men to use toilets, Anushka as a strong opinion influencer is the perfect fit to widen the message. The ministry felt that her influence will help with their outreach greatly and therefore, has chosen her as the face of this campaign. She has shot for two TVCs themed around an anthem like song for the campaign encouraging women to step up against open defecation and for construction of toilets with government initiative.. “

Having ruled the box office the previous year, and with a promising line up of quality films coming up in 2017, Anushka’s consistent performance and commitment to good cinema has made her a household favourite. That she will be endorsing Swachh Bharat campaign validates her huge popularity and she will focus on this campaign with gusto and absolute commitment. The two new TVCs will be worth watching out for.

A Swachh Bharat app was today launched at the National Museum which would soon be rolled out for 116 ASI monuments across the country with the help of which visitors would be able to report garbage on the premises. Culture Minister Mahesh Sharma launched the app at the National Museum where 30 galleries have already been equipped with a device that uses the intranet to connect to the app.

In the next couple of months, 116 monuments under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) would be installed with this device which can be connected to the app using Bluetooth.

The visitors at the monuments can through the app report to the ministry any litter or garbage on the premises. “The app can be downloaded on an ordinary phone and as you enter the premises and switch on the Bluetooth, it will continuously relay Swachh Bharat-related information to you and also ask you to report any garbage around you,” Sharma said. “Every such device has a range of about 30 metres. This has been done to ensure that the person uploading and sending photos is inside the premises of the museum or the monuments.
