The Tamil Nadu government has asked telecom companies to ensure mobile phone towers are operational for uninterrupted communication during the monsoon. The move comes after mobile phone services were affected during the flood last December.
As part of the monsoon preparedness plan, the state government convened meetings with mobile network and tower service providers to discuss the issue, state relief commissioner K Satyagopal told reporters here on Tuesday.
Noting that service providers had shifted switchboards and generators of towers to upper floors, he said, "BSNL has stocked up fuel required to run its towers."
He said mobile network operators had said they would route their services through other states if the need arose.
"This apart, we have made necessary arrangements for movement of fuel and LPG," Satyagopal said. Some fuel outlets in the city went dry during the floods last year, as the supply through oil tankers was hit due to inundation on major roads.
Earlier, revenue minister R B Udhayakumar said seamless communication during the monsoon is vital, and necessary steps were being taken by the commissioner of revenue administration to ensure it.
Residents of Chennai and its suburbs were put to hardship following the floods in the city in 2015. Mobile telephony networks went down as cellphone towers turned inactive for a variety of reasons, including shortage of diesel to run the generators.
Landlines were also disconnected in several flood-affected areas in the city. This left thousands of people incommunicado for a couple of days.
