Starting next month, you may have to give up rail fare subsidy. This comes close on the heels of the government launching the Give it up campaign on cooking gas subsidy.

Railway passengers will be given the option to voluntarily give up their subsidy on tickets. The scheme is set to be launched next month. The government would the railways would offer two slabs to surrender subsidy.

You could either give up 50 per cent of 100 per cent of the subsidy. As of now the railways bears 43 per cent of the cost of all rail fares. The decision to introduce the scheme to give up subsidy is being taken in the wake of the railways suffering a loss of Rs 30,000 crore every year due to subsidised passenger fares.

morons, dont know that rail fare is almost getting equal to air fare... why wud anyone travel in train, if they can, in plane... at almost d same price. !!
Wont that affect d railway business. :damn

Exactlly. This clearly shows that the person who is announcing all these has absolutely no idea about public, public service nor market value. Once it affects they can easily make it private.

Fare is matching with airlines only for Ac class but for normal and unreserved it is almost half of even Bus fare. Govt should increase this fare instead of hiking AC fare always :dodgy

Poor people are using normal and unreserved so if they raise that then its purely business and no public service. Instead they must slightly modify third AC fare and introduce AC only super fast trains and increase normal and unreserved seats in normal trains.

So poor people don't deserve to reach their destination fast ?

There are already lots of delay(close to 30 mins daily in sealdah) before entering big stations bcoz of lack of space. How will you fit more trains in it ? In rush hour there are already trains running with 3-4 mins interval I don't think this gap can be reduced further, also attaching more coach is not a solution also as then trains will be so long that it will not fit into the stations and here there is no place to increase stations length also. Here railway alloted 12 coach trains but stations are 9 coach long and cannot be expanded so only 1 or 2 trains of 12 coaches run daily instead of all trains

Either your place already has more trains or the infrastructure has to be improved a lot. In TN from Chennai to Kanniya kumari still isnt a double track, so only one train can run at a time and this train too has to wait in some station for a long so the train from opposite direction can cross the station and use the same track. Hope someday these works are completed and people get additional trains.
