Security payment issue casts a cloud over India A - England tie

The 50-over warm-up game between India A and the visiting England side on Tuesday (January 9) could be played in front of empty stands at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai after more distractions emerged - this time in the form of payment for security arrangements. Cricket Club of India officials have received a quote from the Mumbai Police amounting to INR 60 lakhs for providing cover for the first of the two warm-up games.

The CCI, which stands to lose its full-member status and thus the rights to grants from the BCCI when the Lodha recommendations take effect, has forwarded the demand to the cricket board and awaits response.

The clash, which the host broadcaster Star is hoping to advertise as MS Dhoni's last game as captain, is expected to draw the star player's fans to the stadium. However, on account of the game being only a practice encounter, CCI will receive only INR 1lakh as hosting fees and cannot charge more than a nominal entrance fee (100-200) to compensate for its security expenditure, leading to the suggestion that the stadium will be out of bounds for non-members of the CCI.

This could potentially lead to scuffles outside the stadium, as in the case during the India-South Africa T20 WC warm-up game in 2016 when the Mumbai Cricket Association blocked the entry gates to the Wankhede Stadium.

In the uncertain aftermath of the Supreme Court verdict of January 2-3 and rumours of Ex-BCCI officials taking a disruptive stand, the board is likely to not accede to the security demands unless the Lodha Committee is forced to interfere. Yesterday, The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), wrote to BCCI CEO Rahul Johri stating the association's inability to host four-day games between India U-19 and England U-19.
