Team India's logo
sponsorship is up for grabs. Star
India, which bought the team logo
rights from the Indian cricket
board (BCCI) last December for
three years, is now looking to
sublet the sponsorship space on
Team India jerseys from this
month till the end of next year's
World Cup.
According to a proposal floated by
Star, the interested bidders have
been given three options to buy the
logo sponsorship for a limited
period.
In earlier deals, BCCI allowed
Sahara, the previous sponsor, to
sublet either the leading arm or the
chest logo, that too only for two
series. It's emerging that Star has
been allowed to sublet the complete
sponsorship space on the jerseys. It
seems BCCI has put some new
clauses in the contract to ensure
Star could sell the logo space to
India Inc. BCCI has confirmed that
Star has been permitted to sublet
logo sponsorship.
Industry sources said the first
option offers 8 to 11 matches of the
upcoming Asia Cup and World T20
Championship for which Star is
asking for Rs 16 crore. The actual
cost of these matches would come
to Rs 6.71 crore, which Star is
paying BCCI.
The second option which Star is
offering is only for Tests and T20s
and the official sponsor of the
Indian team is asking for a net
amount of Rs 40 crore plus taxes.
Star is paying Rs 1.92 crore for
every bilateral match and Rs 61
crore for ICC and Asian Cricket
Council events. So, a total of 18 to
20 matches in 66 to 68 days,
assuming India would play 4 to
maximum 6 ties in World T20 in
Bangladesh, would get BCCI around
Rs 30 crore.
Interestingly, the third option is for
ODI matches only, starting from
Asia Cup till the 2015 World Cup
and here Star is offering Rs 58.5
crore to the potential buyer. If Star
doesn't get a bidder, BCCI will still
make Rs 37.3 crore from these ODI
games. In total, there would be
approximately 24 to 29 matches in
that period.
Star has taken into account the fact
that India would play a minimum 6
to 9 games in the 2015 World Cup,
a minimum 4 to 5 games in Asia
Cup and another four to five games
against Australia.
It has also been learnt that West
Indies are likely to tour India again
this year for 3 Tests, 5 ODIs and
one T20.
