, Jun 21: Sri Lankan navy on Tuesday, Jun 21 captured five Indian boats along with 23 fishermen. The Lankan navy accused those India fishermen of crossing the boundary and entering Lankan waters.

The fishermen were held from Rameswaram, as media reports claimed. Similar incidents have took place earlier. 136 Indian fishermen were freed by the Sri Lankan navy in Feb 2011.

However, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had passed a resolution in the Tamil Nadu Assembly to urge the Centre to impose economic sanctions on Sri Lanka. She said during the discussion on the same, “The Sri Lankan government neither heeds to India or anyone else when it comes to the basic rights of Tamils. Economic sanction is the only way we can force the government there to ensure that the Tamils, who are now locked inside the government-run refugee camps, will have a life of pride, dignity and equality.”

Jayalalithaa also urged to impose sanctions on SL till the point they give equal rights to Tamils there and help in resettle all those displaced in the bloody civil war.
