Sri Lanka drop Kusal Perera; include Lasith Malinga for ODIs against New Zealand

Sri Lanka have dropped opener, Kusal
Perera, for the ODI series against
New Zealand. The seasoned swing
bowler, Nuwan Kulasekara, known
for taking wickets upfront though,
has earned a recall in the 16-man
squad. Lasith Malinga, the spearhead
of Sri Lanka's pace attack, has also
made a comeback into the set-up
after he had to undergo a surgery on
his troublesome left ankle.

In fact, Sri Lankan captain, Angelo
Mathews, had earlier indicated that
Perera needs to perform consistently
to find a regular place in the side.

"We've given opportunities to Kusal
(Perera). He's fared pretty well, I
thought, in a couple of games. He
could have done better. We expect a
lot from him because he is a good
player. We've got nine more games
to try and experiment with the
opening slot."

Tim Southee doubtful for 2nd Test

Tim Southee is doubtful for the
second Test against Sri Lanka due to
an ankle injury. He is set to undergo
a fitness Test on the morning of the
match to decide on his availability.

However, skipper Brendon McCullum
is not too perturbed by the injury to
his leading pacer. "We'll see how he
pulls up in the morning," McCullum
told AAP. "If we think that he's a risk
that is not worth taking, then we
won't take it, but if he thinks he's OK
and we don't think there's a major
risk there, then Tim will start," he
added.

Southee and Trent Boult have grown
into a formidable fast bowling pair
and Sri Lanka will be buoyed if
Southee does miss out. He picked up
six wickets in the opening Test
including a 4-wicket haul in the
second innings. McCullum was
confident of replacing Southee and
said, "Doug Bracewell's bowling the
house down as well and if he does
get an opportunity, I'm very
confident that he'll perform too.

Corey Anderson has regained full
fitness and is available for selection.

McCullum also said that Kane
Williamson will be fit even though he
had a shoulder injury after landing
awkwardly.

New Zealand lead the two-match
series 1-0.
