"As of now, it doesn't look like Rohit Sharma's finger will heal enough before the T20Is and in that case, Hardik will lead the side. As far as KL Rahul is concerned, his T20I days seem to be numbered.”

There is a possibility that the T20I side to be named will comprise only the specialists of that format. Some players like Virat Kohli might also be given a break from the T20 format.

What is the significance of both the series? Why it is played before Australia test?

“Rishabh has done well in Tests and he is not out of form. But yes he has not got many runs in T20s. He will be back in the ODI series. He is crucial for us in the Australia series. In T20s, we have quite a few options including Ishan and Sanju who are getting runs in domestic,” a BCCI official told InsideSport.

The focus of the selection committee will be on the two seniors --- Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Cricbuzz understands that the skipper's injured thumb, which kept him out of the Test series against Bangladesh, has not fully healed and he is required to be given further rest. It has also been learnt that Kohli has sought a break for the T20Is. Rest or break, that could make the selectors' job easy as they want to try out new players for the T20Is.

It is likely that the selectors will stick with the experimental squad for the three-match series with Hardik Pandya assigned the leadership role which he was entrusted with in New Zealand immediately after the World Cup in Australia. Ravindra Jadeja may return with a player to watch out for will be Yash Dhull. Both Rohit and Kohli, however, are expected to be back for the ODI series, an important one considering that the World Cup in India later in the year.
