Maharoof earns recall to Sri Lanka's ODI squad
Farveez Maharoof, Sri Lanka all-rounder, earned a surprise recall to the One-Day International (ODI) squad for the series against Ireland and England, on Wednesday (June 8). The 31-year-old hasn't represented Sri Lanka since the ODI game against Bangladesh in Dhaka in 2012.
Maharoof was in prime form in Sri Lanka's List A tournament in 2015-16, snaring 16 wickets at an impressive average of 6.31. The experienced all-rounder has played 22 Tests, 104 ODIs and seven Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) also announced that Danushka Gunathilaka, Seekkuge Prasanna, Suraj Randiv and Upul Tharanga will all be flown in as additional reinforcements. The visitors are scheduled to play two ODIs against Ireland on June 16 and 18 before the commencement of the five-match series against England, starting on Tuesday (June 21).
Incidentally, Randiv hasn't played for Sri Lanka since 2014. However, he shone brightly in Sri Lanka's premier limited-overs competition by snaffling seven wickets. Tharanga and Prasanna, too, are making a comeback to the set-up, having last played an ODI in July 2015. On the other hand, Gunathilaka, who was selected for the tour of New Zealand, retains his place.
Rangana Herath, the veteran spinner who announced his retirement from the abridged versions of the game earlier this year, will be missing from action. Sri Lanka also will be without the services of Dushmantha Chameera, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Dhammika Prasad. Chameera and Prasad have been ruled out due to injuries, while Dilshan withdrew his name for personal reasons.
