RE: Sri Lanka tour of England, 2016 (1st Test - England Won)
Stokes ruled out of Sri Lanka series after knee surgery; hopes to be fit by July
Ben Stokes is to undergo knee surgery in London today (Tuesday) that will rule him out of international cricket until the Test series against Pakistan in July.
Stokes will have keyhole surgery on his left knee to remove floating cartilage after pulling up in pain while bowling in the first Test against Sri Lanka on Friday. He felt his knee lock while bowling his fifth over at Headingley. Stokes had lengthy treatment on the field and continued to bowl but the injury worsened overnight. He took the field on Saturday but lasted only four overs and saw a specialist on Sunday when scans confirmed the need for surgery.
Chris Woakes was yesterday called into the England squad as cover and will vie for a place with Jake Ball. The Nottinghamshire seamer was in the squad for the first Test and bowled well in the nets before the match. England are keen to see him play but may feel he lengthens the tail too much and could opt instead for the all-round abilities of Woakes for the second Test in Durham starting on Friday.
Woakes, who took nine for 36 in Warwickshire's County Championship game against Durham yesterday, is the safer pick but against this poor Sri Lanka team England should feel able to gamble on a weaker batting line-up to have a look at a young quick bowler. Ball's selection would also put pressure on Steven Finn to perform after he struggled at Headingley until picking up late wickets in the innings-and-88-run victory.
Selecting Ball would push Moeen Ali up to seven, or possibly No?6, in the order if England do not want to move Jonny Bairstow, given his great form. Moeen has averaged 23 with the bat, making just one fifty since dropping down to eight for the South Africa series in the winter. He was out for nought playing a loose shot at Headingley last week, but has knuckled down for Worcestershire this season, averaging 91 in the County Championship. Paul Farbrace, the England assistant coach, admitted Moeen was frustrated with batting so low in Test cricket.
"The difficult thing for Mo when you bat at eight is, it is very easy to bat like a bowler than a quality batsman," said Farbrace. "It is tough on him but the thing for him is to keep reminding himself he is a top-quality batter and keep thinking like a top-quality batter."
Stokes will face around six weeks out and will concentrate on being fit for the four-Test series against Pakistan, which starts at Lord's on July 14. It means the all-rounder misses his first Test on his home ground in Durham this week and, indeed, faces the possibility of never playing a five-day game there.
This week's match against Sri Lanka is the last Test Durham are due to host under the agreements with the England and Wales Cricket Board that run until 2019. There is expected to be a cut in the number of home Tests from 2020, leaving grounds such as Durham likely to host only white-ball cricket.
The timing of the Stokes injury is a blow for Durham who have been using his image in marketing the game as they look to boost flagging sales. Around 25,000 tickets have been sold for the first four days.
Returning to the North-East is Bairstow almost a year on from his first match-winning innings for his country in a one-day game at the Riverside against New Zealand. He smashed an unbeaten 83 as a late call-up for the injured Jos Buttler to seal England's series win.
He has since dislodged Buttler as wicketkeeper in Test cricket. Buttler will return from the Indian Premier League soon and England would ideally like to squeeze both into the team but Bairstow is adamant he wants to keep the gloves.
"I think this needs to be swept under the table now and put to bed. As I've said numerous times, I wouldn't have kept wicket for Yorkshire for seven years if I didn't want to keep wicket for England," he said. "I wouldn't have put the hours in before Dubai, before South Africa, in South Africa, leading into this season if I didn't want to keep wicket."
