Skype is now rolling out new features that lets users send across files that are up to 300MB in size to friends and groups. The Skype team also announced that files can now be shared even if recipients are offline.
Microsoft is on a mission to modernise Skype and with that is bringing some much needed features that will help it keep up with its competitors in the messaging space.
Skype now lets you share files, photos, documents or videos of up to 300MB (each) in size even if the recipients are offline. Moreover, the same files can be downloaded more than once, so there is no need to ask someone for the same file once again in case you happen to modify or lose the original.
More importantly, these files will be available for download across platforms meaning that once downloaded on your smartphone, it will also be available for download on your laptop and other systems.
If you were wondering why 300MB, well, Microsoft has a reason for that. The file size was chosen based on extensive testing, and more importantly, because it “accommodates almost all the file sizes shared over Skype.” Want to share a bigger file? Microsoft recommends using OneDrive for that. But it may not be a good idea considering a free OneDrive account allows for just 5GB of storage. Sadly, messaging services like Telegram allow users to share files up to 1.5GB in size (each), which technically makes Skype’s new feature archaic.
