Microsoft is doing away with multiple operating softwares for its multiple devices. Now, there will be be just one Windows for all platforms — phone, PC, tablet and even Xbox.

“We will streamline the next version of Windows from three operating systems into one single converged operating system for screens of all sizes,” Satya Nadella, chief executive officer, Microsoft told analysts earlier in the week.

Thus, next version Windows 9 to be out possibly in 2015 would unify Windows Pro, Windows RT and Windows Phone.

The company will be the first to have a common OS for multiple platforms — Google and Apple have separate one for mobile devices and mouse-and-keyboard machines.

Microsoft may still sell different editions of the OS — basic and Pro — but, “the new unified platform will allow the creation of universal Windows apps that work across all devices running the OS”, said The Verge, the tech news site.

Since taking over from Steve Ballmer, Indian-born Nadella has tried to streamline processes and change the company’s internal culture.
