The medical team of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on Sunday (December 11), that Indian pacer Mohammed Shami and wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha will be out of fifth Test against England, starting on December 16.
Shami has soreness in his right knee and has been advised rest and rehabilitation. He will be going to the National Cricket Academy, Bengaluru to start his recovery programme. Saha, who suffered a hamstring tendon injury in the second Test of the ongoing series against England at Vizag, is undergoing rehabilitation programme at the NCA.
Shami, who had picked up 10 wickets at an average of 25.2 in the first three Tests, was rested from the Playing XI for the fourth match in Mumbai. While Bhuvneshwar Kumar was picked in the side for Shami, Shardul Thakur was called as a back-up for the pacer in the squad.
Saha, too has enjoyed a good run in 2016 - with both bat and gloves. He has scored 366 runs in nine Tests at an average of 40.66, including twin half-centuries in Kolkata which earned him the Man of the Match. In these matches, he also took 17 catches and effected two stumpings. Parthiv Patel, who had played only a solitary Test for India since 2004, was called in as a replacement for the Bengal wicketkeeper at the back of some consistent performances in domestic cricket. He justified his selection with some neat work behind the wicket and a quickfire half century in Mohali.
The selectors are yet to announce Shami's replacement for the fifth Test, which is set to be played in Chennai, starting on December 16th.
