Virender Sehwag’s omission for the last two Tests against Australia expectedly evoked strong reactions in the Delhi cricket circles. Sehwag’s form had slumped and quite alarmingly. It wasdebated if the selectors would be more patient with him. His axing comes after hislongtime opening partner Gautam Gambhir was shown the door, also because of poor form.

Amar Nath Sharma, his coach, believes that this is just a temporary break in Sehwag’s career. He insists that Sehwag has a good two to three years of left in him.

“My advice to Viru is to take a break from the game. It will do a world of good to his career,” Sharma said.

“India has never seen a match-winner like him. I think the team still needs him. But before he tries to make a comeback, he needs proper rest and rejuvenation of, at least, a month or so. After that I am going to address his weaknesses,” Sharma said.

Asked if batting with glasses could have been a factor behind Sehwag’s quiet run, he said, “History is witness to many players who have been as successful with spectacles as they were without it. In case Viru feels it is an issue, which I am not sure of, then he can overcome the problem at nets,” said the veteran Delhi coach.

Sharma also feels that Sehwag could do with playing more ODIs.

“Viru has won more matches for India than anyone else. Now that he is 34, he needs to make a choice among Tests, ODIs and T20s. If you ask me, he must concentrate on playing more ODIs than other formats. I believe he can play till the next World Cup,” Sharma said.
