Seagate has announced two new storage innovations at the Flash Memory Summit conference in Santa Clara, California. The new products from the company include a 60TB Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) SSD and an 8TB Nytro XP7200 NVMe SSD. It is important to understand this 60TB SSD offering from Seagate is not coming to the consumer market anytime soon.
It was Samsung which earlier held the title of having built the largest capacity SAS SSD (15.36TB PM1633a), which it unveiled in March this year. This hard drive is based on a 12Gb/s SAS interface, and is aimed at enterprise data storage system. The 2.5-inch form factor allows the user to fit two of these drivers in a standard 19-inch 2U rack.
Seagate’s 60TB SSD however, has opted for the familiar 3.5-inch HDD form factor. Seagate claims that this drive has twice the density of the Samsung PM1633a and four times the capacity, and that it is capable of holding up to 12,000 movies or 400 million images. The company plans to come up with a 100TB version of the hard drive in the same form factor.
The Seagate 8TB Nytro XP7200 NVMe SSD is aimed at hyper-scale data-centres that involve big-data analytics and high-performance computing – the likes of which are required in scientific research and weather modeling. This drive features a PCIe interface, making for high-speed data transfers and four separate controllers.
Seagate 8TB Nytro XP 7200 NCMe SSD will be available through channel partners in the fourth quarter of 2016. The 60TB SAS SSD however is still a technology in evolution, and a final product can be anticipated in 2017.
