Samsung has updated its tablet portfolio with the unveiling of 8.9 inch and 10.1 inch tablets at CTIA Wireless 2011 in Orlando.

The new 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab will feature Honeycomb (Android OS 3.0), a WXGA 1280×800 display, a 1GHz dual core processor, high speed multitasking, 1080p HD video playback, front-facing 2-megapixel camera for video calls, rear-facing 3-megapixel camera, and will be HSPA+ enabled. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 is also reportedly lighter than Apple iPad 2 by 131gms. It also claims to have a battery life of 10 hours from its 6800-mAh battery.

Incidentally, Samsung has denied market speculation of massive inventory build-up in its Galaxy tablet. Online media outlet MoneyToday reported market rumors that Galaxy Tab inventory was running at several hundred thousand units.

The company also showed off its 10.1-inch version. Both the tablets are 0.34 inches thick.

The 10.1-inch Tab will also host the new TouchWiz 4.0 user interface specifically designed for Android 3.0. Some of the special features to be found in this UI include the Live Panel, Mini Apps Tray and a social hub that integrates social networking sites into a single interface.

The company also said that it will be rolling out a Readers Hub that offers approximately 2,300 magazines, two million books along with numerous newspapers and other publications.

While the 10.1-inch Tab will be launching on June 8, the 8.9-inch slate is expected "early this summer," according to Samsung.

The 8.9-inch version is approximately priced at $469 (Rs 21,064) for a 16GB and $569 (Rs 25,519) for 32GB. The 16GB version of the 10.1-inch device is approximately priced at $499 (Rs 22,379) and the 32GB at $599 (Rs 26,864).
