Samsung starts mass producing 256GB storage chips for smartphones, tablets
South Korean titan Samsung has reportedly started the mass production of 256GB flash storage chips for smartphones and tablets.
With Galaxy S7 and S7 edge smartphones already available in the market, it is likely that Samsung will debut the storage chips commercially with the launch of Galaxy Note 6 phablet in September this year.
However, Samsung Galaxy Note 6 will not be the first smartphone with 256GB in-built storage as Asus Zenfone 2 Deluxe already comes with 256GB storage onboard.
Samsung's 256GB mobile storage chips are based on the Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 standard and can reach SSD-level read/write speeds of up to 850/250Mbps, Samsung says. The flash storage will also allow seamless Ultra HD video playback and ensures faster data transfer from PCs when used with USB 3.0.
Xiaomi's new Mi 5 flagship smartphone also features UFS chips for faster data transfer.
