Robots to Find Victims Trapped under Debris

It is common at times of building collapse and earthquakes to find security personnel running helter-skelter to trace victims trapped in the debris.

Let alone pulling the victims out of the concrete rubble, finding people trapped under debris becomes a major problem.

With this in mind, a city-based organisation Hyderabad Science Society (HSS) has developed a prototype of a robot which can help in locating the victims without any human intervention.

The robot, attached with two cameras, speakers and a microphone, will capture images and send the data back to personnel supervising the rescue operations.

“This prototype robot is one feet long, eight inches wide and around seven inches in height.

It will have light attached to it so that it can go deep inside the debris and look for the victims,” said HSS director Sanjar Ali Khan.

The idea to develop the robot was conceived about a year ago to help in the rescue efforts carried out by police department and defence forces during disasters which claim numerous lives, he said.

Currently, the robot which is undergoing preliminary trials is connected to power line and communication system cables and is expected to be operated through a remote control post the field trials.

“The field trials are going on at our lab and will continue for six to eight months.

Although, presently, the robot is connected to wires once it becomes fully operational we will ensure that it will function through a remote control,” he adds.

About four scientists of HSS, have been working on the project since last April. ‘’No other robot at this given size carries equipment like batteries, microphone and lights,” he adds.
