After disappointment in the doubles department, the onus lies completely on the singles shuttlers to return with a medal. The largest badminton contingent that India has produced for the Olympics was in Rio but two medal hopes have been dashed out early in the group stages itself. The combinations of Ashwini Ponnappa-Jwala Gutta and Manu Attri-Sumeeth Reddy crashed out after losing their first two respective group stage clashes.
Now in singles, Saina Nehwal carries India’s hopes once again for a medal and a repeat or better of the London showing. She started with a straight sets victory against local Brazilian girl who made the Hyderabadi toil and stretch. But in the end, Saina won 21-17, 21-17.

India’s shooting campaign at the Rio 2016 Olympics has been a disappointing one. A contingent of twelve, there were hopes of multiple medals but so far, none have arrived. Abhinav Bindra came closest in the 10m air rifle event but lost in a shootout. Jitu Rai faded out in a surprise qualifying miss in the 50m Air Pistol event and now it all boils down to two men – Gagan Narang and Chain Singh. The final day’s event sees them competing in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions qualifying and then a possible final if all goes well.
Gagan Narang would hope to bank on his experience and let go of the so-close-yet-so-far situation in the 50m Rifle Prone qualification where the final five shots let him down. Chain Singh, first time Olympian, would be eager to do better than the 36th rank that same day
