India’s subscription video on demand (SVOD) market, which rebounded to 125 million subscriptions in 2024 after a temporary dip in 2023, is set for strong growth in 2025 driven by industry consolidation, including the merger of Star India and Viacom18, and increased efforts by premium platforms to expand in smaller towns, said industry experts.

For the past two years, live sports have been offered for free, but according to industry insiders, this strategy could see a change as Jio Star explores new subscription models for entertainment and sports content. Significantly, live sports included advertisements even when it was behind the paywall.

Industry executives suggested that Disney+ Hotstar is likely to remain the flagship platform post-merger, with JioCinema being absorbed into it. However, in a recent interview with ET, Uday Shankar, vice-chairman of Jio Star, said that the company was still weighing its options between maintaining separate platforms and merging them into a unified service.
