Reliance Jio Infocomm on Wednesday announced its decision to invest Rs 3,000 crore in West Bengal over a two-year period for setting up necessary infrastructure to roll out its fourth generation (4G) services.

Reliance Jio Infocomm is backed by Mukesh Ambani promoted Reliance Industries Ltd.

4G network telecom services include high-speed upload and download of video and data. For example, a minute-long video will take a few seconds to download compared to 2G or 3G networks.

According to Tarun Jhunjhunwala, business head and state mentor - East, roll-out of 4G services in West Bengal will be possible by the year-end.

4G broadband service roll-out will also be carried out across Delhi and Mumbai (from Navi Mumbai) by the end of this year. The company has already sought permission from the Department of Telecom (DoT) for initial trials.

“We intend to create a direct and indirect employment for around 5,000 people here in the State,’’ Jhunjhunwala said during the inauguration of a community policing and security servicing programme here in the city.

Reliance Jio's investment will include the setting up of 3,000 towers across 56 towns and cities in the State.

A network of around 5,500 km of high speed optical fibre cables will also be laid across the State. Nearly, half or 50 per cent of the optical fibre network will be laid in Kolkata proper and greater Kolkata (areas adjoining the city).

The roll out of 4G broadband services will be simultaneous in Delhi, Mumbai and Jamnagar.

Plans are afoot by Reliance Jio to introduce 4G services in the metros of the Eastern region by the end of this year or by March 2014.
