Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio , the 4G telecom operator is now planning to foray into the taxi space with the launch of an app-based taxi service, Reliance Jio Cabs . The service is likely to be launched as early as this year.

Reliance Jio, which started commercial operations on September 5 last year, has been offering free data and voice services to its over 100 million customers. The telco will start charging its customers starting April 1, 2017.

According to a FactorDaily report, Jio has already ordered some 600 cars for its own fleet from makers such as Mahindra and Hyundai to kickstart the service. The service is likely to be launched in Bangalore and Chennai initially, followed by similar launch in Delhi and Mumbai.
The telco is expected to compete in the taxi service segment with aggressive pricing.

Jio has also roped in consulting firm E&Y to come up with pricing strategies that align with Reliance Industries Chairman Ambani’s plans to “go all out to get market share,” a source told the publication.

Interestingly, Reliance Jio earlier this monht inked a strategic partnership with Uber for the roll out of JioMoney, the PPI Wallet, as one of the payment options for the latter’s services in India.

Under the deal, JioMoney users will be able to request and pay for their Uber rides from within the JioMoney application, the telecom operator said. The partnership will give a major boost to cash-free payments in India and provide mobility options to millions of Jio users.

Reliance Jio is also planning to enter automobile telematics with the launch of a car connected device, which was developed by the telco itself. The device will control vehicle's movement and alert owner about fuel and battery through a mobile app, besides providing WiFi service among others.

ET earlier reported that Jio was in advanced talks with automobile companies to launch the device, which will be launched at around Rs 2,000 in coming months, and it is working on modalities on its sales model for existing cars as well. The hardware device will be initially imported from China, but the vendor has been asked to start making it in India after initial roll-out.
