Earlier today, at the annual general meeting (AGM), Reliance Industries (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani announced the launch of Reliance Jio 4G LTE services. With its next-generation 4G LTE and VoLTE services, the telecom operator aims to offer high speed internet and content services at affordable prices. Reliance Jio is grabbing all the headlines for its disruptive pricing of voice and data services. The company announced that all outgoing voice calls will be free for lifetime. And when it comes to data tariff, you get 1GB of data for Rs 50, which is the lowest in the world. Weeks before the official launch, incumbent network operators such as Airtel and Vodafone had already started feeling the heat and dropped their data prices by offering up to 67 percent more data. We compared the data tariff of Reliance Jio with Airtel and Vodafone in Mumbai, and here’s how they fare.

Reliance Jio’s commercial launch is set to take place on September 5, and as an introductory offer, customers get unlimited voice calls and unlimited mobile data till December 31 2016. The company is also offering unlimited access to Reliance Jio suite of apps till December 2017, which otherwise costs Rs 15,000 per year. However, the data consumed while watching live TV, listening to music or watching on-demand movies will be debited from the free data that users get with Reliance Jio plans. This is probably to keep Net Neutrality. After the introductory offer ends on December 31 2016, Reliance Jio users can use plans from Rs 149 a month, all the way up to Rs 4,999 a month. There are also special data plans starting at Rs 19 per day to Rs 299, valid for 21 days. Let’s take a quick look at the plans and the benefits that you get.

To begin with, any pack from Rs 19 to Rs 4,999, gives you unlimited outgoing calls to local and STD numbers, which is also applicable when you’re roaming within India. You also get unlimited SMS (except for Rs 149 plan), unlimited 4G at night (between 2AM to 5AM) and unlimited access to Jio apps, which costs Rs 1,250 per month. Reliance Jio will also be deploying one million JioNet Wi-Fi hotspots across India by next year, and the tariff plans also include some data accessible on those. So, let’s say you’re at a railway station or a coffee shop or a shopping mall with JioNet hotspot connectivity, you can turn off mobile data and access the internet via the hotspot. The data consumption here will be from the Wi-Fi hotspot allowance. In case of other operators, you have buy voice and data plan separately.

As we can see in the plans, Reliance Jio’s aggressive plans are here to disrupt the market. It will be interesting to see how other operators react and bring competitive pricing to answer Jio. We have been trying Reliance Jio, both on LYF smartphone and via JioFi 2 portable hotspot device and the speeds have been pretty good so far, ranging between 4Mbps to 27Mbps. However, with Reliance Jio aiming for 100 million subscribers, it remains to be seen if the network is capable of handing that many users, or will fizzle out as number of subscribers join the network.
