After making Snapdragon 820 official in August last year, Qualcomm has now unveiled its new and slightly upgraded flagship mobile processor, the Snapdragon 821. While Snapdragon 821 does not bring any major upgrades, it does promise modest performance improvements with slight speed bump.

The Snapdragon 821 processor is built upon Snapdragon 820, and brings about 10 percent performance improvement, Qualcomm says . It is still a quad-core CPU with custom Kryo cores running at maximum clock speed of 2.4GHz, compared to 2.15GHz on Snapdragon 820. While there is no word on GPU speed, Qualcomm has mentioned that the Snapdragon 821 will use the same 600Mbps X12 LTE modem, as the Snapdragon 820.

The current flagship chipset, Snapdragon 820, powers majority of 2016 flagship smartphones, which includes some variants of Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge , the LG G5 , HTC 10 , Xiaomi Mi 5 and OnePlus 3 . We have used the HTC 10 and LG G5, and in our experience, the Snapdragon 820 is a very capable chip that not only offers a power packed performance, but is also energy efficient at the same time. It also brings major thermal improvements compared to Snapdragon 810, which was plagued with overheating and performance issues.

The Snapdragon 821 processor is expected to debut in smartphones starting second half of this year. Could the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 be the first device to come equipped with this processor? The two HTC made Nexus smartphones – Marlin and Sailfish could also be powered by the same processor.
