A significant announcement was made by the chairman of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) on Wednesday (19 October) when he stated that the final of the 2017 edition of Pakistan Super League will be played in Lahore. Sethi revealed the plan during the PSL draft that was held in Dubai.
International cricket in Pakistan has been out of bounds for teams since 2009, when terrorists attacked the convoy of the touring Sri Lankan team. Security issues have always forced teams from staying away although Zimbabwe did tour in 2015, playing three ODIs and two T20Is, all at the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore.
The move to stage the final of the PSL in Lahore is noteworthy because of the presence of a galaxy of international players in the league including the likes of Kevin Pietersen, Chris Gayle, Eoin Morgan and Brendon McCullum amongst others. Sethi was confident of addressing all concerns regarding security.
"International players know what we can do; most of them are ready to come to Pakistan and play," he said. "It will be a fly-in, fly-out plan and the government has promised to give full security to the players. We are convinced that the final will happen in Lahore."
The presence of players from various countries and other officials for the final would help in spreading word about adequate security measures in Pakistan, hoped Sethi.
Until the final, the PSL will take place in UAE, just as it did in the inaugural edition earlier this year. The league consists of five franchises for the first two editions, but Sethi also announced that there will be six teams from 2018 onwards.
The inaugural edition was a successful one for PCB and Sethi is hoping that the popularity of the league increases by the year. The move could also prove to be a major boost for the Pakistan Cricket Board that hasn't hosted a Test in the country since the 2009 attacks.
"It is part of our move to take cricket back to our country," said Sethi.
