09/29/2011 New Delhi National Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will visit quake-hit
Sikkim today. The state government will hand him a
detailed report on the damages caused by a 6.8
magnitude earthquake which struck Sikkim on
September 18. West Bengal Chief Secretary Samar
Ghosh told reporters that the PM will reach Gangtok via Bagdogra in north Bengal from Delhi. As rescue
and relief operations continue, the number of dead
has crossed 75. To help with relief operations,
Sikkim's government employees have also decided
to contribute a day's salary.
 
The Prime Minister announced a Rs1,000 crore package to Sikkim and also assured all help and cooperation from the central government to fight the tragedy and devastation caused by the earthquake.
