India’s first pod taxis are coming to India and will be connecting Gurugram to Delhi. The Rs 850 crore project will begin next month. The public transport will connect people via ropeway connected driver less pods. The taxis are expected to solve traffic congestion for lakhs of office-goers on the NH8. Every pod can take up to five passengers. Starting with Ambience Mall, 16 stations have been planned for the projects which will be connected to Delhi.
For all those who don’t know, the personal rapid transit (PRT) network is made up of small automated vehicles that will run at regular intervals on a guide-way with docking stations for passengers to get on and off the pod.
Passengers can also hire an entire pod which will take the passenger directly to their destination. The pod can generally accommodate up to five people. The average speed of the pod is 60 kmph.
Earlier, Punjab and Haryana government had announced roll out of pod taxis in Amritsar and Gurgaon, but it never came into function. A kilometre of metro costs at least 250 crore while a monorail costs Rs 200 crore. The cost estimate has been given by NHAI. The Metrino system can be built with just Rs 70 crore. NHAI official was quoted saying, “The NHAI will roll out the project soon. We have set a target of a year. Subsequently, we could extend this to Dhaula Kuan and Manesar on each side.”
Earlier, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had announced the work of Metrino pod taxi service by July this year. Although the Centre has given its approved the project, the UD Ministry has sought to know as to which ministry will be responsible for the safety audit of the taxi service. The Transport Ministry has claimed that since the project aims at decongesting NH-8 it comes under their domain.
