New Delhi, July 29 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said that an economist Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has failed to control price rise, check corruption and take the opposition along on vital issues like the Lokpal Bill.
"It seems to me that he (Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh) has once again spoken about his failure and he tried to argue his case. I believe that an economist Prime Minister has failed in the examination and he has put forth before the people of India, the reason and causes for his failure," Gadkari told mediapersons after the Prime Minister's interaction with senior news editors here.
"In a way, by giving repeated assurances to the people of India that inflation would brought under control, he has deceived the people of the country," he added.
Dr. Manmohan Singh earlier today met editors T N Ninan (Chairman, Business Standard), Raj Chengappa (editor-in-chief, Tribune), Kumar Ketkar (Editor, Divya Marathi), Alok Mehta (editor, Nai Dunia) and M K Razdan (editor-in-chief and CEO, Press Trust of India).
Criticizing the UPA Government at the Centre, Gadkari said the prices are rising because of inappropriate economic policies, bad and corrupt governance of the ruling Congress party.
"Speaking on the issue of inflation, the Prime Minister said that inflation is a global phenomenon. As far as I remember, last time I had told you about the inflation rate of different countries of the world. It is incorrect to say that inflation is a global phenomenon," said Gadkari.
"The main cause of rising inflation is the wrong economic policies and bad and corrupt governance of the Congress party," he added.
Gadkari further said it was inappropriate on the part of the Prime Minister's side to blame the opposition for the deadlock on the Lokpal Bill, as the opposition has always backed the government.
"When a team comprising of the civil society members and central ministers was constituted, at that time the Prime Minister and his government were aware, that both the opposition leaders hold an important position in the parliament and even their support is required for the passage of this important bill. At the time of formation of the committee they did not think about the opposition, we were not consulted and when their dialogue with the civil society failed, at that time they remembered us," said Gadkari.
"On top of that, they are saying that we are not supporting them, this is very sad and shocking statement for me. I would like to make it clear that till now all the bills that have been tabled in the parliament, the government has first presented the bill and after that the opposition has discussed it and either supported it or disapproved it," he added.
The final meeting between the government and civil society representatives on the Lokpal Bill ended on June 21 with differences continuing to persist on six issues including bringing the post of the Prime Minister under the purview of Lokpal.
