Ranchi: Three bogies of the Palamu Express and its engine were derailed when Maoists triggered a blast on the railway tracks between Chhipadohar and Barwadih railway stations in Latehar district on Tuesday night.

The incident, which occurred in a dense forest area, has left hundreds of passengers terrified. Palamu Express runs between Barkakana and Patna.

"No report of injuries has been received so far," Palamu DIG Saket Kumar Singh said.

A source said around 10 metres of the railway tracks have been damaged on the CIC section (Ranchi-New Delhi route) under Dhanbad division of South Eastern Railway. The incident has disrupted rail traffic on the crucial section. Several important trains are stranded at various stations, the source said.

A police officer said the Maoists used an improvised explosive device in the blast. Jharkhand police spokesperson S N Pradhan said: "The exact damage caused by the blast is yet to be ascertained. Security forces have been rushed to the spot."
