Whatever political mileage that was expected out of this whole thing is now in doldrums. I think Indian Govt. did not expect this retaliation from Pakistan. Looks like we are at war now, and there won't be one country which will be at loss after any war.

Edit: If we look at the present situation, it will be India who will lose more, if we go for a war. Pakistan anyway is not financially stable right now, but whatever progress India as a country made through all these years will be at risk.
