The Pakistan Cricket Board is likely to announce the new head coach of the national team on May 3 after taking approval from its board of governors.
A reliable source in the board said Chairman Shaharyar Khan will submit shortlist of candidates for the head coach position at the board of governors meeting for final approval.
“Khan will most likely announce the new head coach on May 3 followed by a procedure to appoint the assistant coach, batting and bowling coaches with the consultation of the new head coach,” the source said.
Pakistan are searching for a new head coach after Waqar Younis stepped down last month following the national team’s poor show in the Asia Cup and World T20 events. No high-profile Pakistani player sent his application for
the position.
“Only two or three low profile Pakistani players applied for the post but Shaharyar is now talking to former Test stalwarts Mohsin Khan and Aaqib Javed directly and has requested them to send in their applications to him directly to complete the formality,” he said.
Most of the top Pakistani candidates have chosen to ignore the April 25 deadline as they believe the board has already made up its mind to appoint a foreign coach.
“Everyone knows that with Wasim Akram and Ramiz Raja are on the coaching committee and they will recommend a foreign coach,” Aaqib who has returned to Dubai said.
Several top foreigners have applied for the post of the Pakistan team’s head coach by the PCB deadline including England’s Peter Moore, South African Mickey Arthur and Australians, Dean Jones, Tom Moody, Stuart Law, Jamie Siddons and the Flower brothers from Zimbabwe.
