The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to name the new head coach of the Indian cricket team on June 24 after it was revealed that the board's Working Committee is scheduled to meet in Dharamsala next Friday to take stock of things.

Former cricketers like Ravi Shastri, Anil Kumble and Venkatesh Prasad and Sandeep Patil, chairman of the national selection panel, are some of the notable names in the race for the top job. BCCI received as many as 57 applications during the 10-day period after it formally advertised for the vacancy through its website on June 1.

Although the BCCI sources maintained that 'it's the normal agenda', the panel is likely to identify the new coach, less than two weeks before India's departure for their next assignment - four-match Test series in the West Indies.

Ajay Shirke, the new honorary secretary of the board, is handed the task of shortlisting viable candidates before a formal interview round is conducted.

BCCI had named Sanjay Bangar as he interim coach for the ongoing limited-overs series in Zimbabwe. The Indian team has been without a head coach since the tenure of Duncan Fletcher expired with India's exit at the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup.

Apart from naming the coach, the committee is also expected to validate the suggestions put forward by the technical committee, including holding Ranji Trophy games of the upcoming season at neutral venues. A meeting of the Ranji Trophy coaches and captains is also scheduled for June 23 at the same venue.

BCCI also announced that Sanjay Jagdale, the former secretary of BCCI, will act as the chief co-ordinator of the cricket advisory committee that comprises of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman for finalising the head coach of the Indian team - a post that has been left vacant since the end of Duncan Fletcher's tenure after the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.

The hunt for the new Indian cricket team's coach seems to be ending sooner than expected. Anurag Thakur, Board of Control for Cricket in India president, confirmed that the declaration of the new head coach will be made by Thursday (June 23) evening, according to ANI.

"Announcement on Indian cricket team's head coach will be made by this evening," Thakur, currently in Dharamsala for the BCCI's first annual cricket conclave, said on Thursday morning.

The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising former star batsmen Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, and headed by Sanjay Jagdale was given the responsibility to appoint India's next coach. The committee, who revealed that they'd completed the interview process, had earlier sought time until Friday morning to submit their findings. However, the process seems to have been completed sooner than expected.

Former India spinner Anil Kumble has emerged as the leading candidate to take over the post as TOI earlier reported that a powerful member of the BCCI has backed Kumble to be picked ahead of his immediate competitor Ravi Shastri for the job of head coach.

India have been without a coach since the end of ICC World Twenty20, when the contract of Team Director and coach Shastri ended. Sanjay Bangar was appointed as the stand-in coach for the tour of Zimbabwe. The BCCI put out advertisements for new coach on June 1, which invited an overwhelming 57 applications.
