KARACHI: Pakistan’s Open team fought back gallantly on the third day of league matches to draw closer to leaders India in the 16th Bridge Federation of Asia and Middle East (BFAME) Championships being held at Chennai’s Chola Sheraton Hotel.

Second placed Pakistan trailed by only nine VPs at the end of the eighth round while holders India continued to lead the table with 155 VPs. Pakistan, however, found themselves relegated to the third position, behind India and Jordan, at the end of the seventh round of the Ladies Championship.

Pakistan’s Open team comprising of Rashid-ul-Ghazi, Tehsin Gheewala, Tahir Masood, Javed Ahmed, Syed Hassan Jawwad and Hasan Askari with Tariq Rasheed Khan being their NPC and manager, came back strongly by securing maximum points in successive rounds while whipping Jordan 25-4 and Sri Lankan 25-2. With an aggregate of 146 VPs, Pakistan narrowed the gap with India, while Saudi Arabia (111 VPs), Bangladesh (104) VPs), Jordan (103 VPs) and Sri Lanka (85 VPs) had a lot of catching up to do in the last seven rounds.

The Indian Open outfit containing of Ashok Kumar Goel, Suhas Vaman Vaidya, Sumit Mukherjee, Bhabhesh Saha, Pritish Kushari and Debabrata Majumdar with Sudhir Aggarwal being their NPC, improved their chances of reaching the finals once more with their steady performance.

The Indian Ladies team having Rita Chokshi, Bharti Dey, Yvette Singapuria, Prabha Kundar, Geeta Lakhani and Aparna Sain, also extended their good form to lead the pack of four with 120 VPs.

The Pakistan Ladies team featuring Zeenat Azwer, Fizza Adamjee, Qudsia Dossa, Rubina Agha, Shamim Mahmood and Farida Ahmad with Khalid Mohiuddin being their NPC and coach, slumped to third position with 100 VPs.

Jordan, having Randa Al Saket, Azza Qashu, Aida Abu Jabber, Maha Fuad Hamadeh, Hala Zabeneh and Huda Sake with Yasmin Khattak being their NPC, climbed to second position with 106 VPs, leaving Palestine, containing Mais Bitar, May Abugharbieh, Lubna Alsalem, Maha Malhas, Noura Kanan and Laila Haddadin, at the fourth and last position with 94 VPs.
