DUBAI: Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal took his fourth five-wicket haul in Tests as Pakistan completed a facile nine-wicket win within four days in the second Test against Sri Lanka on Saturday to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Needing 94 for victory, opener Mohammad Hafeez remained unbeaten after scoring a quickfire 59 and knocked off the runs with Azhar Ali (29) after Pakistan lost Taufeeq Umar early.

Pakistan bundled out Sri Lanka for 257 in their second innings and restricted the visitors' lead to a paltry 93.

The 34-year old Ajmal with five for 68 led the Pakistan spinners, who took eight out of the 10 second innings wickets to fall, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Ajmal ran through the Sri Lankan tail, keeping the batsmen guessing with his 'doosras', after fellow left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman (2-65) broke a stubborn seventh wicket stand by dismissing Dhammika Prasad.

Angelo Mathews (52 not out) and Prasad (33) added 56 for the seventh wicket to take the lead closer to the 100-run mark.

Delay in naming Pak ODI squad vs SL

Lahore: The announcement of Pakistan's one-day squad for the forthcoming series against Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates has been delayed due to the induction of new Chairman Zaka Ashraf.

A member of the selection committee said the plan was to finalize the one-day squad after the second test but they would now wait for clearance from the new Chairman.

"We will wait till the Chairman calls us for a meeting to discuss the one-day team and then we can go ahead with our announcement. Basically we have shortlisted 18 players for the series," he said.

Acting chief selector Muhammad Illyas was not among those who greeted the new Chairman when he came to the PCB headquarters at the Gaddafi stadium on Friday.

Sources said that Illyas didn't want to give an impression to the new Chairman that he wanted to score points with him.

"Illyas is waiting for the Chairman to call him and other selectors," one source said.

They are indications and going by past incidents whenever a new Chairman has taken charge that Zaka might opt for a new selection committee soon.

But a source said for him it would be all about timing.

"The present selection committee has done well with their selected team winning the second test against Sri Lanka and the Abdul Razzaq led squad also winning the Super sixes tournament in Hong Kong," he added.

Permanent chief selector, Mohsin Khan is presently working with the Pakistan team as interim coach for the Sri Lanka series.

Misbah hailed as super skipper

Pakistan manager Naushad Ali yesterday praised captain Misbah-ul Haq, saying his leadership qualities are key to the team's progress after a turbulent last year marred by a spot-fixing scandal in England.

Misbah led Pakistan to a nine-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second Test here on Saturday, taking a 1-0 series lead.

"Misbah is a wise captain and his best quality is that he is cool. As a batsman also he is in great form since being made captain," said Ali.

Dilshan, Misbah back use of UDRS

Tillakaratne Dilshan and Misbah-ul Haq have called for the use of the Decision Review System in all cricket.

Kumar Sangakkara was controversially adjudged lbw in Sri Lanka's nine-wicket defeat against Pakistan in the second Test on Saturday.

"I cannot comment over what went wrong on the decisions. I am very happy if the DRS is there when the match is going 50-50, it is important to have it," said Dilshan, who was wrongly adjudged caught behind in the drawn first Test.

Pakistan captain Misbah said he was always a supporter of the DRS: "It really helps teams and umpires. It should be there in all matches as I see it as a great initiative."

Misbah positive on series win

wxCE3.jpg

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq riding on a year's success, vowed to remain positive in his bids to win the series against Sri Lanka as the teams prepare for the third Test starting here on Thursday.

Misbah hopes his team comes down hard on Sri Lanka, as it did in the drawn first Test at Abu Dhabi and then during the nine-wicket win in the second Test in Dubai last week.

“We will go for another win at Sharjah and I have told the players to go positively, in the same manner as they have been doing,” said Misbah, who has not lost a series since taking over in October last year. Misbah said the key to Pakistan's success has been its collective strength. If Pakistan wins the series 2-0, it will move up one spot to replace Sri Lanka at fifth in the Test rankings. “The best thing about this team is that no single player is a key for us. Everybody here is the key… it's a relatively new team, but players are gaining experience and it's helping the team,” said Misbah.

Lahore: Shahid Afridi has been included in the Pakistan squad for the ODIs and Twenty20 against Sri Lanka.

Former Pakistan skipper Afridi, who returned from his self-imposed retirement recently, was expected to find a place in team's limited overs squad following a sort of reconciliation with newly appointed Pakistan Cricket Board president Chaudhary Zaka Ashraf.

Afridi announced his retirement after his leadership skills and performance was questioned following the away series against the West Indies in April and May this year.

The 31-year-old player was also said to have differences with then team coach Waqar Younis, who stepped down citing health problems lately.

Squad: Misbah-ul-Haq (capt), Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Hafeez, Imran Farhat, Younis Khan, Umar Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Sarfraz Ahmed (wk), Saeed Ajmal, Abdul Rehman, Umar Gul, Aizaz Cheema, Juanid Khan, Sohail Tanvir, Abdul Razzaq, Asad Shafiq
