Yes, you heard the headline right. You can pre-
order a Whopper on eBay before the first
Burger King outlet opens on Sunday at the
Select Citywalk Mall in the South Delhi. Burger
King and eBay have tied up for the pre-order,
and users will be able to do the same between
November 3 and 5.
The offer entails a 5-inch Whopper Burger,
which is the signature meal of the Burger King
franchise. For India, Burger King will have a
vegetarian, chicken and mutton Whopper.
Traditionally, the Whopper has always been a
beef burger, but due to cultural sensitivities in
India, the company has opted not to offer the
standard Whopper, which is an understandable
move.
McDonalds comparatively does not even offer
a lamb or mutton based burger in the country.
That said, there are burger joints all over the
city which cater to a niche audience and offer
traditional American beef burgers.
More than what is being offered, it is rather
perplexing that one can pre-order food online.
The idea is rather preposterous, but also hints
at the type of footfall Burger King is
anticipating on day one. Nonetheless, the
entire ordeal reeks of a gimmick especially
with the participation of eBay which is largely
a non-player in the modern e-retail scenario in
India. Perhaps, a better method would have
been developing a mobile app.
Now, eBay India is selling burgers online
