After announcing real-time traffic updates on the web based maps, via NAVTEQ Traffic Pro, Nokia has extended these updates on its mobile maps and navigation application, Nokia Drive, on its Symbian and Windows Phone smartphones. Just like the web version, the service will initially cover Delhi and Mumbai and will enable drivers to make re-routing decisions with ‘accurate’ (as claimed by Nokia) arrival estimates. However, on being asked how the service collects traffic data, the company execs responded that it would be based on data probes from other Nokia/NAVTEQ maps users. So we wonder if that would actually deliver accurate updates, since it would be totally dependent on devices equipped with NAVTEQ maps. The traffic updates will be offered via a software update for Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive.
Traffic updates will be offered through colour coded scale to measure traffic, with green for free flowing traffic, yellow for sluggish traffic and red for heavy traffic, similar to the web version.
The company informed that it has covered 1500 kilometers, and the update will be available in form of an XML feed via standard HTTP protocol. The feed will be refreshed every two minutes, according to the company. Nokia claims that its navigation app offers turn by turn voice navigation for 750 Indian cities, in Hindi and English.
MapmyIndia, one of NAVTEQ’s competitor, also offers a real time traffic update service online for Mumbai and Delhi. However, it is only available online and has not been integrated with maps, at the time of writing this post. Besides being available on in-car navigation systems, both MapmyIndia and NAVTEQ maps are integrated with navigation apps through providers such as Sygic and Nav4D for iOS and Android devices, and cost around $49.99. Nokia also offers free navigation on its Symbian and Windows Phone powered phones through Nokia Maps.
