The state owned telco MTNL has confirmed that it is not going to participate in the 2G spectrum auction scheduled to begin in November as it has sufficient airwaves.
Talking to media persons MTNL chairman and managing director AK Garg said that the company already has spectrum and licence and has no plans to go for bidding.
He said that in order to expand its reach it is focussing on areas like GSM services network, broadband services and wired telecom segment. Garg said that the company was awaiting government guidelines on the issue on the CDMA expansion.
The company which has operations in Delhi and Mumbai is planning to provide 15,000 ultra high-speed broadband connections.
Garg said that MTNL is planning to increase the speed of 3G network and has already floated tenders to expand and looking at 250 sites (towers) each in Delhi and Mumbai.
He said that the company has taken initiatives to reduce losses and generate revenues which include surrendering BWA license and reducing interest burden.
“We are also leasing out spare space with us which is expected to fetch Rs 100 crore annually," he said.
“Over the last three years we have been making losses. It is now important to improve revenues. We expect to earn about Rs 100 crore by renting out spare place. We are also working towards exploiting our land banks. We have started work on the EOI floated by experts and consultants,” said Garg.
