Next World T20 to be held in Australia with a changed format
The next edition of the ICC World T20 will be held in Australia in 2020. The ICC has decided to hold the World T20 every 4 years from now, pretty much like the 50 overs World Cup. The ongoing edition being held in India will witness England taking on the West Indies in the final at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
This will be the first time when Australia will host the World T20. The previous editions of the World T20 have been hosted by South Africa, England, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh respectively, while the current one is being hosted by India.
The format of the World T20 has also been altered as more opportunities are in store for the Associate nations. The 2020 World T20 will be a 16 team affair in the group stage. The group stage will be followed by the quarter-finals, like the format of the 2015 ICC World Cup.
The news of having as many as 16 teams is welcome for fans of the game after pessimism engulfed the cricketing fraternity after it was found out that only 10 teams would participate in the 2019 ICC World Cup.
Below, is the list of teams that will participate in the 2020 World T20:
Australia, England, India, Bangladesh, New Zealand, Pakistan, West Indies, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Zimbabwe, UAE, Netherlands, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, Ireland
