India v New Zealand, 1st ODI, Dharamsala: Five talking points ahead of ODI series

After India's 3-0 sweep of New Zealand in the Test series, the focus shifts to ODI cricket with the first of five matches being held at Dharamsala's HPCA Stadium on Sunday. Here are five talking points ahead of the series.

Can the real Martin Guptill stand up?

While in Test matches the New Zealander averages just 29.38, in ODIs and T20Is he assumes a different cloak: that of a dangerous, big-hitting opener with a penchant for significant innings. If you have any doubts, just look at his two highest scores in ODIs: 237* and 189*. After a poor Test series in which he made 159 runs in six innings with one fifty, Guptill - and his team, of course - will hope to shrug off the struggles. The high-altitude Dharamsala stadium, where the ball is known to travel fast on a good batting deck, may just be the start to the series that Guptill needs.

Suresh Raina's back; can he make it count?

When announcing the squad for the first three ODIs recently, the new chairman of selectors MSK Prasad stressed on how Raina's experience and bowling gave him an edge in what he termed a squad "with several youngsters". But in truth, it is with the bat that Raina, who will turn 30 in November, has to deliver. Recalled for the first time since October 2015, he has a chance to slot bad into the middle order and make an impact. His Test career all but over, can Raina use this latest comeback to add to his impressive ODI numbers?

Mandeep Singh's big chance

With Shikhar Dhawan sidelined with a broken thumb and KL Rahul not recovered from his hamstring pull, the selectors chose Mandeep as opening partner to Rohit Sharma. Earlier this year, he went to Zimbabwe and played in three T20Is, with a personal best of 52*. He now looks primed for an ODI debut, having scored 198 runs in six games for India A in the quadrangular series they won in Australia, with a best of 95 coming in the final to fetch him the Man-of-the-Match award. In 75 List A matches, the 24-year-old averages 38.29 with three hundreds and 18 fifties. New Zealand are a much stronger team than Zimbabwe, and if Mandeep succeeds in the chances given to him, he could remain in the selectors' plans for the future.

New Zealand, spinning to win it

The last time New Zealand played in Dharamsala was in March during the ICC World Twenty20, and they beat Australia by eight runs in a thrilling contest. Their brightest star that day was left-arm quick Mitchell McClenaghan , but he is not on this tour. Thus the focus shifts to the spin pair of Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi, who during that tournament in India this year troubled most teams that bowled to. Not least India, who were stunned by New Zealand's spinners on a turning track in Nagpur. Santner bowled well in Tests, and Sodhi is a better bowler in limited-overs. Can the pair put smiles on New Zealand faces in the ODIs?

Can New Zealand finally win an ODI series in India?

While in multi-team tournaments their record on Indian soil is 18-11, the bigger picture is that New Zealand have never won a bilateral ODI series in India. The four series contested between the two teams - in 1988, 1995, 1999 and 2010 - were each won by the home team. That last series resulted in India winning all five matches. Cut to 2016, and New Zealand are a stronger ODI team - they're ranked third, above India - and have players capable of turning around the mood of their tour. Will Williamson's team be able to buck the trend against India in bilateral? Or will Dhoni's India make it five series wins over New Zealand?

Suresh Raina to miss Dharamsala ODI due to viral fever

The Indian team will be without the services of Suresh Raina for the first One-Day International against New Zealand in Dharamsala as the left-hander is suffering from viral fever.

In a media release, Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed the development. "The BCCI Medical team has confirmed that Suresh Raina, who is recovering from a bout of viral fever, is ruled out of the first ODI of the Paytm ODI Trophy against New Zealand," the statement read.

The 29-year-old left-handed batsman last played an ODI in October 2015 and was subsequently left out of the team owing to poor form. He was named in the 15-man squad for the first three ODIs against New Zealand.

Raina was part of the Uttar Pradesh team that played its Ranji Trophy against Madhya Pradesh in Hyderabad. Raina did not bat in both innings, and reportedly flew back home mid-way through the game to recuperate.

The first ODI takes place on Sunday (October 16) in Dharamsala, while the second and third will be played in Delhi and Mohali on the 20th and 23rd respectively.
