Stumps: Day One
The New Zealand playeres walk up to Virat Kohli to shake hands with him. The Indore crowd are clapping him off with gusto. Their first day of Test cricket, nearly 20,000 people came to watch and they couldn't have asked for more. A two-paced pitch made batting not entirely straightforward, but after the odd blip in reading lengths early in his innings, Kohli's feet started moving. His strong bottom hand started piercing gaps. His running between the wickets was electric as usual; helped him secure his 100th run despite a direct hit. It was his first ton at home since 2013. Ajinkya Rahane has provided excellent support, though he was troubled by the short ball quite often. Credit to him for gutsing it out.
New Zealand go off to the dressing rooms having not made that many mistakes, but they have fallen a considerable distance behind in this Test. Matt Henry bustled in, hitting the deck hard and trying to exploit its two-paced nature. Trent Boult was a bit off. Jeetan Patel picked up a wicket in his first over and his drift made things quite difficult. Mitchell Santner was there and thereabouts, but all of them tired in the final session where India amassed 119 runs in 34 overs.
