IND vs NZ: New Zealand speedster Tim Southee ruled of Test series against India

New Zealand strike bowler Tim Southee has been ruled out of the Test series against India after injuring an ankle in training, New Zealand Cricket said Saturday.

Matt Henry has been rushed into the squad as a replacement.

Southee is to return home for rehabilitation and will return to India for the ODI leg of the tour beginning next month.

"Tim has been working hard in preparation for this tour, so he`s understandably very disappointed to be ruled out of all three Tests," coach Mike Hesson said.

"The focus now is for Tim to give his ankle 7-10 days rest, before slowly building his bowling loads back up ahead of the ODI series."

The first Test starts in Kanpur on Thursday.

New Zealand pick Anderson as specialist batsman for India ODIs

Corey Anderson, the New Zealand all-rounder, has been picked as a specialist batsman for the One-Day International series against India, the selectors announced on Monday (September 19). Anderson has not played for New Zealand for more than six months due to a back injury. He recovered recently and returned to action which prompted the selectors to include him considering his vast experience of playing in Indian conditions.

"Corey's superb professionalism throughout his rehab process has led to this point, and it's a credit to him and the hard work he's put in," New Zealand selector Gavin Larsen said.

"We're excited to have Corey back. He provides power through the middle-order and knows the conditions in India well. He's still working on his bowling and we'll continue to monitor that, but for this series, he will be used solely as a specialist batsman."

Mitchell McClenaghan, Adam Milne, Colin Munro and George Worker are recovering from injuries and hence were not picked. The selectors also dropped Henry Nicholls and recalled batsman Anton Devcich, all-rounder Jimmy Neesham and wicketkeeper BJ Watling.

Neesham recently made a comeback to the Test squad as well for the India series and Watling on the other hand, hasn't played an ODI for more than three years.

"India conditions are known to be quite harsh, so it's really important that we have cover for all positions," Larsen said. "Luke Ronchi and BJ Watling provides us with wicketkeeping and middle-order cover, while Anton is another spin option for us and can bat anywhere in the order.

"The last time we played ODIs was in the Chappell Hadlee series and victory there helped us reach the world number two ranking. We obviously want to keep growing on that and this series is another massive challenge for us."
The first ODI will be played in Dharamshala on October 16.

ODI squad: Kane Williamson (c), Corey Anderson, Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Anton Devcich, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, James Neesham, Luke Ronchi, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, BJ Watling

James Neesham ruled out of Kanpur Test

James Neesham, the New Zealand all-rounder, was on Monday (September 19) ruled of the first Test due to a rib injury. The 26-year-old picked up the injury before the start of the practice game against Mumbai last week.

The Auckland player didn't take much part in the warm-up game because of the injury. He bowled only five overs and did not bat in both the innings. New Zealand Cricket (NZC), however, have not named a replacement.

Mike Hesson, the New Zealand coach, is confident that it is not a long-term layoff and that Neesham will be fit for the remainder of the series. "Jimmy was struck in the nets and has been in discomfort the last few days," he said ahead of the first Test.

"It will take a few days for the bruising to go away, but it's very much a short-term injury," added a confident sounding Hesson.

The Kanpur Test would have been Neesham's comeback game since he suffered a back injury against Australia in Brisbane last October. The all-rounder had decent outings for his domestic side Otago in the home season as well as English county side Derbyshire, which eventually helped him to get on the plane to India.

Squad for first Test: Kane Williamson (Captain), Trent Boult, Doug Bracewell, Mark Craig, Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Luke Ronchi, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling.

Ishant Sharma, India's pace spearhead,
will miss the first Test against New
Zealand in Kanpur, starting on
Thursday (September 22) as he is
recovering from Chikungunya, a viral
disease transmitted to humans by
mosquitoes.

Anil Kumble, India's head coach,

series opener and also revealed that
the team hasn't asked for a
