India vs New Zealand: Eden Gardens wicket will not spin from day one, says Sourav Ganguly

Former India captain and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) chief, Sourav Ganguly on Tuesday said the moisture-laden Eden track may take some time to aid the spinners during the second Test against New Zealand starting in Kolkata on Friday.

With frequent rains the entire Eden ground has been under cover so the pitch may have retained “some moisture” and so would take some time to turn, the CAB president said.

“It won’t turn from day one. This is the first match of the season on this wicket. There’s moisture still left in the pitch so it will depend on the amount of sunshine it gets. But there will be spin as the match progresses,” Ganguly said.

Both teams will also have to keep a watch on the sky with the Met department forecasting “rains and thunderstorm” and the new Eden ground condition, which has been revamped, also may be tested during the course of five days.

The second Test will be played on an untested wicket, but curator Sujan Mukherjee said there is nothing to worry about as the wicket is in good condtion.

“The wicket is in good condition. We just need some sunshine to prepare the wicket through rolling. The grass has been trimmed,” Mukherjee said.

“This will not be the first time we will have to go through this sort of a situation. The Test in Kanpur is also being played on a fresh wicket. But I can assure you our wicket will be better than the one at Green Park,” he added.

After clinching the opening Test by 197 runs in Kanpur, India will be eyeing to seal the series by taking an unassailable lead in the three-match series.

Here are some of the things that you need to know about Jayant Yadav:

#1. Jayant Yadav made his first-class debut for Haryana in 2011 at the age of 21. He picked up six wickets in that match, helping his side to a big win against Gujarat.

#2. He rose to the scene in the 2014-15 season when he picked up 33 wickets in the Ranji Trophy and played couple of “Tests” for India A also in that year.

#3. Yadav is more than a useful batsman as he has already scored a double ton in First Class cricket. He scored 211, which was also his maiden hundred, against Karnataka, and shared a record-breaking stand of 392 for the eighth wicket with Amit Mishra.

#4. He started the 2015-16 Ranji season with his second first-class hundred while batting at No. 4, in a partnership with his new Haryana team-mate Virender Sehwag

#5. Yadav's fifth match in first-class cricket was against a touring England XI in Ahmedabad, where he took four wickets in the first innings, including that of Alastair Cook, who is just a few runs away from becoming the first Englishman to score 10000 runs in Tests.

#6. He played only three matches in his debut IPL season in 2015 but showed he could be economical as he finished with an economy rate of 4.14.

#7. Once in an interview, Yadav confessed how on occasions when he came back to the hotel rooms, he found himself running up and bowl beside the plush bed.

#8. Yadav also talked about what he prefers the most in an interview. He said, “My forte is days’ (multi-day) cricket. Off-spin and batting.”

#9. Jayant credits his father for taking him to the academy in Delhi where he started to learn the basics of the game. His father also used to play cricket in his younger days.

#10. According to him, he used to bowl leg-spin when he was very young. But how did he turn to off-spin then? Yadav shared a funny story about that in an interview when he said, “I started as a leg-spinner, but the funny story is that I have two first cousins who were also leg-spinners so they said it’s not allowed. You cannot have three leg-spinners in the family. At that point, I really thought that was a thing and I turned to off-spin.”

India vs New Zealand: Jimmy Neesham ruled out of Kolkata Test, Jeetan Patel delayed

New Zealand all rounder Jimmy Neesham has been ruled out of the second Test against India due to a rib injury that had also kept him out of India’s 197 run in Kanpur. The win gave India a 1-0 lead in three match series.

New Zealand coach Mike Hesson confirmed Neesham’s unavailability.

“Jimmy Neesham’s injury will rule him out of at least this test,” Hesson told reporters. “That takes away options in terms of changing our balance a bit. But that’s okay. We are not able to get any replacement in time who is a batting allrounder. Unfortunately, we have got a few other injuries at home as well, which makes that really challenging.” added Hesson.

Neesham, was re-called into New Zealand’s Test squad, after battling a back injury which had forced him to return from Australia in November last year.

To add to New Zealand’s woes, off-spinner Jeetan Patel who returns to the Kiwi setup in place of injured Mark Craig will only reach Kolkata on Thursday – a day before the second Test begins. His flight from England was cancelled and that will give him limited time to get used to the conditions and to get practice in.

With Neesahm out, New Zealand have only one option left should they leave Martin Guptill out, Henry Nicholls, the left-handed batsman who averages 27.62 from six Tests. He had scored a half-century in his last Test, against South Africa in Centurion last month. As New Zealand opted not to train on Wednesday, that decision is likely to be made only on Thursday, the day before the Test.

This further compounds New Zealand’s concerns with Tim Southee and Craig already out with injuries.
