Reliance Jio has already been making waves for its Preview Offer, but details about the full-fledged commercial rollout of its services are scarce at the moment. However, with annual general meeting (AGM) of Reliance Industries set to take place on September 1, the company’s chairman Mukesh Ambani could finally disclose details about the launch date and the much-awaited tariff plans that will be applicable after the 90 days trial period ends. If reports are to be believed, the AGM could be the biggest one for Reliance Jio till date.

The Indian government has been asking Reliance Jio to file its tariff plans, after which it could commercially start its operations. However, Reliance Jio has blamed competitor telecom operators for not giving enough interconnection points, leading to 65 percent of call drops on Jio network. This is one reason that has been delaying the commercial rollout of Reliance Jio services, the company claims. In return, Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COIA), which includes top telecom operators have accused Jio of running its commercial operations in the name of Preview Offer.

Reliance Digital, the retail arm of Reliance Industries has already launched a bunch of Android smartphones under LYF-brand. In less than three months since launch, LYF had also made it to the top five smartphone brands in India. Now, a person familiar with the matter told ET that Reliance plans to make LFY among the top three smartphone brands in India. “While Reliance Jio has now opened up the preview offer to almost all the leading smartphone brands which were earlier exclusive to LYF customers, there will be some special tariff plan for LYF customers to ensure the handset sales continue and drive volume sales,” a spokesperson told the publication. The Rs 3,000-10,000 segment contributes to major smartphone sales in India, and if you take a look at LYF range of smartphones, most of them are targeted in this price range itself.

The Jio Preview offer with 90 days of unlimited voice and video calls, unlimited internet and unlimited access to Jio suite of premium apps was initially introduced with LYF handsets. Now that the offer is been expanded to other smartphone brands too, Reliance Jio may come with special tariff plans to make these smartphones even more attractive. If a recent report is to be believed, Reliance Jio may bundle LYF handsets with Preview Offer validity of 365 days.

Industry sources will be closely observing announcement at Reliance AGM as the tariff plans are likely to kick off a major price war in India, which will also trigger a digital revolution in the country. From what we have come across so far, Reliance Jio could offer its services at ‘substantially lower’ rates compared to the rival telecom operators. Affordability, content services and HD voice calling via VoLTE network are major areas where Reliance Jio has been focusing.

Rival telecom operators have already started facing the heat Airtel , Vodafone and Idea Cellular have already slashed mobile data rates by up to 67 percent. Bharti Airtel is also offering unlimited voice calls on some of its postpaid plans. It’s good to see operators playing the price war, as it will eventually benefit the consumers. India is one of the counties to have lower rates for voice calls, and if the trend continues, we may also have the lower data rates.

We will be closely keeping a tab on all the announcements that Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani will be making at the AGM tomorrow, and keep you informed about the same.
