Shortly after West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee accused the media of 'glorifying rape', a police complaint was filed on Monday about a minor school girl being assaulted in Cooch Behar district of the state.

"A complaint has been filed that a 15-year-old school girl was abducted and allegedly raped by two persons while she was returning home from school. A medical examination will be conducted today (Tuesday). No arrests have been made so far," superintendent of police Pranab Kumar Das told IANS.

The incident reportedly happened Saturday in Cooch Behar, some 700km from Kolkata. The girl was abducted by two men who took her to a secluded place and raped her.

She was later found in an unconscious state and was admitted to a hospital. She reported the incident to her family following which a complaint was filed late on Monday night.

"The girl has identified one of the offenders but she is not aware about the identity of the other. We are investigating the matter and soon will arrest them," officer-in-charge Kotwali police station Debashish Ghosh said.

While speaking at a programme in Kolkata, Banerjee had on Monday accused the media of glorifying rape and also took a dig at modern permissive society, but stopped short of linking it to the rise in crimes against women in the state.

"Earlier, if men and women held hands, parents would reprimand them. Now, everything is done openly. It's like an open market with open options," Banerjee said.

"Rape is sought to be glorified by these people. This will not be tolerated by people. Negative journalism only destroys and it is time to champion positive journalism," she had said.

A spate of incidents of atrocities against women, including rape, has been reported in the state in the past few months.
