Bing revamped in battle for search engine supremacy


When Facebook goes public in the coming weeks, there will be a lot of winners. Among them is one of the stalwarts of the tech industry, Microsoft, which has a small stake in the company.

But Microsoft has an even bigger bet on Facebook through an alliance between its Bing search engine and the social network. And that partnership is about to get even deeper.

On Thursday, Microsoft introduced a set of changes to Bing that it says will improve searches by tapping into the expertise of friends on Facebook and other social networks. The company hopes to mine people's online social connections to provide more personal search results for everything from hotel searches in Hawaii to movie recommendations.

For example, if you are logged into your Facebook page through Bing, and you search for "best hotels in Maui," you will get results with pictures of friends who have shared some affinity for Maui before on Facebook, whether by listing it as their hometown in their Facebook profile, liking the island on Facebook or posting photos from a previous Maui vacation.

"This is a fundamentally different way to look at search," Qi Lu, president of Microsoft's online services division, said in a recent interview in a high-rise building here, a few miles from its main campus, where its Internet operations are based.

The new version of Bing is the biggest overhaul to the search engine since Microsoft introduced it three years ago. It is the result of a continual conversation at the company about how to make Bing a more effective competitor to that other search engine - Google - and try to stem its considerable losses. In its last fiscal year, Microsoft reported operating losses from its online services division of $2.6 billion.

Strengthening the ties between Bing and Facebook is also another sign of how Microsoft and Facebook are working together to provide a counterbalance to their common adversary, Google. While Google is by far the dominant player in the Internet search business, it also competes with Microsoft in productivity applications and with Facebook through its Google Plus social network.

And like Microsoft, Google earlier this year began to integrate data from its social network into its search results through an initiative it calls "search, plus your world."

Microsoft has announced major facelift for its Bing search engine, introducing more “personalised search results” using data from social networking sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn. Microsoft is going to integrate a new sidebar that will allow friends on social networks to guide on a search. Bing is also getting an instant snapshot column, which features additional information and links to useful content such as maps, reviews and reservation tools.

According to Derrick Connell, corporate vice president of Bing, the update will roll out in the next few weeks. Users will be receiving a notification after signing up at the Bing site. “Increasingly, the Web is about much more than simply finding information by navigating a topically organized graph of links,” says Qi Lu, president of Microsoft’s Online Services Division. “We’re evolving search in a way that recognizes new user paradigms like the growth of the social graph, and will empower people with the broad knowledge of the Web alongside the help of their friends.”

The “new Bing” is in test now at http://www.bing.com/new and is available by registration. The new Bing has three sections, the leftmost pane carries the main search results, the middle pane known as “Snapshot” has links to useful content turning a search result into directions, the right most pane has been integrated with the social media.

The right side bar has “ask friends” to seek advice from friends on social networks, “friends who might know” to link search with interest of known friends, and “people who know” to display results from social networking sites. The side bar also has an activity feed, letting users interact with their social networks without leaving the Bing page.

The forthcoming Bing update is considered to be Microsoft’s another attempt at leveraging its partnership with Facebook in a bid to challenge Google’s dominance in search segment. Google recently integrated social media into its search with Search Plus Your World, which mainly had Google+ content such as photos, profiles, and posts that are relevant to your keyword. Google however drew flak for not integrating Twitter and Facebook results.

Microsoft's major Bing revamp goes live

Microsoft today unveiled its new Bing search engine upgrades to the public, debuting the snapshot element and a new marketing campaign.

Three years after its initial launch, Bing is getting the social media treatment, with a focus on its new three-column design and its "snapshot" feature. The upgrade was first announced last month, and goes live for everyone today.

Bing dramatically revamped its search results page last month, the first update since the site debuted three years ago.

Snapshot's center column is nestled between the standard Web results on the left and a new sidebar on the right. According to the Bing blog, it brings to the forefront relevant information and services related to your search.

"With snapshot, Bing does the heavy lifting by organizing useful information so you can act more quickly," the blog said.

"It provides people with a clear, visual reason why they should 'break the Google habit,'" a Microsoft spokeswoman said.

Users got a sneak peek last month at Bing's update through the search engine's preview link — previously available at bing.co/new — which showed integration with Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Quora, Foursquare, and other social networks.

"We believe that delivering a superior product that actually solves customer problems will push Bing to the forefront," the spokeswoman said. "And this will come naturally as we continually improve and refine Bing."

Now searchers can visit Bing.com for direct access to the new site. Microsoft has been leaning toward a social media tie-up since 2010, when Microsoft connected Bing search results with Facebook "likes." Bing can detect if a user is logged into Facebook, and pull those "likes" to build Web search results.

According to a Bing survey, more than 90 percent of people reported that they tend to seek advice of family and friends as part of their decision-making process.

"With Bing, it's easier than ever to get that input and go from searching to doing," Microsoft said.

In line with that process, the Microsoft search engine designed its new social features to allow an easy exchange of ideas and sharing of opinions, building the same confidence someone may feel after bouncing an idea off of a friend, the blog said.

Today's announcement included the search engine's new advertising campaign, Bing Summer of Doing, "designed to inspire people to do amazing things this summer," the blog said.

"We feel our unique approach will be attractive to consumers because it provides social context to search without compromising the organic results — ultimately helping people do more," the spokeswoman said.

Days after the initial Bing reveal, meanwhile, Google unveiled what it called its "Knowledge Graph," which combines a Bing-like "snapshot" panel with results that appear closer to Wolfram Alpha's own knowledge engine.

As part of our partnership, Bing will provide additional data to Klout. Search data has long been one of the missing signals in our effort to fully recognize a person’s influence. Just as Wikipedia articles can reflect a person’s real world influence, search results for a person signal accomplishments achieved beyond social networks and serve to influence others. There will be two data points from Bing that will initially be highlighted as part of Klout moments. Experts who appear in Bing’s “People Who Know” section of the sidebar will be recognized on Klout. Influencers who have a Wikipedia account associated with their Klout profile will also be rewarded for the frequency that they are searched on Bing.

Over the next few months, we will include this data in the Klout Score and continue to add signals generated from Bing searches. The coverage of people who have Bing data associated to their Klout account will continue to increase as Klout helps surface more influencers in Bing search.

Discover News Authors on Bing

Much of the information we consume and search for relates to current events, and the most recent and accurate information often comes from news articles. Behind every article is a journalist, writer or author who has worked hard to research and report on a story. These professionals are experts in their fields, sharing the latest news, developing events and information out with the greater world.

Today we’re announcing the addition of news authors to the People Who Know section in the Bing sidebar for customers in the US. Bing’s sidebar helps connect you to these types of people; people who are knowledgeable on the topic you’re searching for including friends you know and experts and enthusiasts you may or may not be familiar with. Now, when you search for a topic, authors who frequently write articles related to your query will appear alongside other experts and enthusiasts in the sidebar. Hover over the person’s name to learn more about them, see their top articles related to your query, or link to their Twitter page.

While the sidebar provides a summary for some authors, you’ll see a link to “See all articles” which takes you to that author’s articles related to your query right in Bing. We’re just beginning to surface the countless number of authors out there to build this feature, so while we won’t have author pages for everyone, we’re hard at work to grow our coverage so stay tuned.
